How to Score a Deal on Fishing Kayaks for Sale
Posted by Forrest on Jan 14th 2025
Let’s settle on a fact that, while it may not be a secret, is also not entirely welcome.
Boat-related expenses are, for most anglers, the steepest they will face in pursuit of their quarry.
Granted, lures and rods and reels and all other manner of tackle can command a steep price, but nothing quite so severe as the vessel itself, or its related upkeep.
You know what they say boat means, right? Break Out Another Thousand. They’re expensive.
And so, some anglers, for the convenience or accessibility, choose fishing kayaks in lieu of larger vessels.
But even these can be quite expensive, with price tags in the thousands.
So how can you score a deal on inexpensive fishing kayaks for sale?
Well, here are a few insider tips and tricks.
Shop a Sale
First things first, don’t just pay sticker price because that’s what a retailer wants. Wait for a sale. Oftentimes, retailers and other merchants will post sales for Christmas, as well as at the beginner or end of the season.
The latter is what you’ll really want to wait for if you actually want to find some discount fishing kayaks. End of year blowout sales usually incur the steepest markdowns, making the odds better that you’ll come across an inexpensive fishing kayak.
Shop Clearance
Clearance is, in many ways, better than a sale, because for the most part retailers run sales to earn revenue, whereas most retailers mark items down and put them on clearance because they need to get rid of them. In some instances, a seller might even sell a cleared kayak below cost just to recoup some of the loss or to free the floor or warehouse space.
The other good thing about clearance is that, while sales can be predictable and clearance can’t, many retailers are running some sort of clearance deals all year long. This means you can be opportunistic but it also means you need to keep your eyes peeled.
Put a few shops or internet addresses on rotation and check back every week or so to see what’s getting cleared, then be ready to strike while the iron is hot.
Shop Last Year’s Deals
Buying a new release from a brand like Jackson or Hobie is pretty much a guarantee that you’re going to get gouged on price. If you’re serious about shopping for discount fishing kayaks, look at last year’s models.
It’s even better if the model’s out of production because if it’s end of life, the seller will be more likely to part with it. Just wait a while and see if it goes on sale.
Skip the Pedal Drive
While there are plenty of benefits to pedal-driven kayaks - whether they use fins or a propeller blade - these models almost always cost more than those that are paddle-only.
Paddle-only models are usually among the more affordable, even inexpensive fishing kayaks, and on top of that, there are plenty of other reasons to get one.
Here are a few considerations: paddle kayaks have a shallower draft and therefore are better in water that has a lot of weeds or other submerged obstacles. They are also simpler and therefore easier to maintain.
And, of course, there is the cost.
Skip the Peripherals
Kayak angling can be as involved or as basic as you make it. And, while there are some fishing kayak accessories you will definitely want to have for safety’s sake, there are others you can skip.
For instance, do you really need a trolling motor with spot-lock technology? Can you skip the fish finder? Or how about the shallow water pole anchor?
This is just a list to start you off. Find places where you can cut corners without harming the experience and you’ll be able to angle more affordably from a kayak.
Shop Cheaper Brands in Fishing Kayaks for Sale
Some brands of angler kayaks for sale generally command higher prices than others. For instance, Hobie, Native Watersports and Jackson Kayaks are among the more premium brands and are going to cost a bit more.
Other brands, like Viking or Hammerhead Kayaks, might offer you a chance to score a better deal. Of course you should still wait till the end of the season to wait to see what gets cleared before you buy.
Adopt Spartan Fishing Practices
Lastly, see if you can apply some of these practices elsewhere so you can save a bit on your other tackle. Then you can recycle that back into your funds for discount fishing kayaks. It’s tempting to buy a fully-loaded fishing platform, but do you always need it?
All in all, think about what gear you can skip because it’s nice to have rather than essential, and either get that cheap, or forgo it entirely.
