Beyond Basics: Unconventional Sporting Uses for Your Jackson Coosa X
Posted by Forrest on Oct 28th 2024
Let’s face a simple truth. Some fishing kayaks are better than others for certain pursuits and disciplines. For instance, paddle driven kayaks - or those with integral electric motors - offer more mechanical advantage and power for fishing on moving water, such as in tides. As a general rule, they also make it easier to cover more open water more quickly.
But in the backwater, and in other tight spaces, as well as anywhere plagued by a lot of weeds, shallow water, or submerged obstacles, a paddle-driven kayak like the Jackson Coosa X still reigns supreme.
Moreover, while a Jackson Coosa X makes a great fishing rig in freshwater and saltwater, there’s a lot more flexibility that it offers, too. Here are several unconventional sporting disciplines for which your Coosa X is perfectly designed.
Kayak Camping
One of the great things about the Jackson Coosa X is that there’s a ton of room in the cockpit as well as in the bow, along with a large, dedicated hatch at the bow.
You have the flexibility to store quite a bit of gear in the tie down and hatch at the bow, as well as in the equally capacious stern tankwell.
More than enough room for a tent, clothing and other camping accessories, which makes the Coosa X the ideal kayak camping rig.
Plus, the lack of a pedal drive means there’s nothing that can malfunction when you’re in the wilderness.
Jump Shooting Ducks and Other Waterfowl
The lack of a pedal drive also makes the Jackson Coosa X an excellent vessel for jump shooting ducks. It’s also not a bad “sneakbox” for decoying ducks, either.
There’s tons of room for decoys, the lack of a pedal drive means you can get into impossibly shallow water, and the superior stability of the kayak means you can comfortably shoot from it.
You will need to cover it up or change the color, though. Give it your own camo paint job and it’ll be perfect for hunting.
Frog Gigging
The Coosa X isn’t just great for hunting ducks. It’s also great for hunting frogs, for two very specific reasons.
One is the stability. You need to lean and lunge to connect with bullfrogs, and the Coosa X is stable enough to do so.
The other is the lack of a pedal drive, which once again is here a selling point. You’ll be in inhospitable shallow and weedy marshes and swamps; only a paddle-driven model will suffice here, and that model is the Jackson Coosa X.
Crabbing
Crabbing is, in many ways, the saltwater analog to frog gigging. You need to get into really shallow, skinny water, and you only need basic gear.
But with crabbing, you’ll need a lot of space, either for your traps, or for a cooler and bushels to store your catch.
The Coosa X, with all its room ahead and astern, is the perfect rig. For those that live in coastal areas, it’s great for both pursuits.
A Trapline Rig
Do you trap amphibious furbearers like nutria, muskrats, beavers or otters? Your trapline will be along rivers and flooded areas, then, right?
Well, sometimes to secure your quarry you need to get wet, which makes hoofing it a bit tough. Perhaps instead of hoofing it you should paddle.
Bring along a floating gun case and a rimfire, the Coosa is the perfect trapline yak.
Scouting Otherwise Inaccessible Areas
Serious whitetail and turkey hunters know that the more pressured species like these are, the harder are your odds of success, even if you’re stock still and a champ at calling.
Sometimes, going where other hunters can’t (or just won’t) makes the difference. Getting there by water is a cheap and effective way to do it.
Obviously, though, you’ll need a vessel, which incidentally will also make it easier for you to transport back your quarry.
Bowfishing
The Jackson Coosa X, primarily because it is so stable, also makes an excellent bowfishing platform. Whether you arrow gar, carp, cats, or something else, the Coosa X has enough room and is plenty stable to bring you success.
Targeting Any Other Shallow Water Species
Lastly, the Jackson Coosa X is just a plain old great fishing rig when you’re targeting any species in shallow water since it doesn’t have the impediment of a pedal drive. Whether you fly fish or cast, if you’re in shallow water, this thing is tops.
